British Food Centre in San Carlos

Saturday I finally had a chance to stop by this storefront marked with the Union Jack on El Camino in San Carlos. The entire store is dedicated to foods beloved by Brits. I’ve been to Manhattan’s Myers of Keswick, and this spot seems larger and more fully stocked, although perhaps not as quaintly prim.

Candies and biscuits (cookies) are a big part of the inventory. I bought some prized Maynards Wine Gums (52g roll for $1.10). Five freezer cases, including two packed with the Cameron line-up made in Florida, have bangers, meat pies, haggis, scones, Irish butter, bacon, crumpets, and more from US, Canadian, Irish and UK producers. A good selection of Patak’s curry powders and mixes is available, showing just how integral the Indian flavors are to the national taste. Preserves, salad creams, junket, and many other brands and products craved by ex-pats round out the stock. A gent with a Dubliner lilt in his voice bought three cases of mixed frozen foods that he said he was stashing in a cooler to drive down to Southern California.

Open 10-6 Monday-Saturday and 12-6 on Sunday.
