why do i always seem to end up at M&I INTERNATIONAL FOODS grocery and restaurant whenever i hit brighton beach? i guess its easy and i just like the place. i had a pretty standard meal, but if you have not been a nice bonus is that you can sit in the outside seating and watch the trains go by.
so i had the house cherry compote to drink (mandatory and very good), some pickled herring and onion, some buckwheat kasha/grote with gravy to which i added some of the left over sliced onion from the herring, pelmeni dumplings, the house russian rye bread and a mighty fine cherry blintz w/ an airy dollop of sour cream for dessert. seven bucks. its great, but its steam table so try to go before one or two pm.
instead of M&I i walked the strip and did most of my shopping at GOLD LABEL deli. i got smoked fish, kvass to drink, peter the great brand black bread (it is great), some serrano ham from spain (pkg for $1), and sliced russian salami i saw some serious looking russian guys get ahead of me so i got some too. later i bought some cheap caviar at the caviar stand while eating a shish from the shish kebab cafe place nearby (i got caspian sea malossol 1.75oz for $8).
i also picked up a small bottle of vodka for the freezer before i left. it's beryozka brand and its 375ml and cost $4. i have no idea i havent tried it and i did not do any vodka homework other than see that the bottle would fit easily in the freezer.
so there you go with some bb strip food and shopping.
question: i've been to all the bigger usual bb restaurants like ODESSA and PRIMROSKI, but anybody know about the littler cafes on the strip like ARABAT, PARIS, ST PETES and like those? how are they? i poked around, but they all didnt seem to have many customers so i skipped them. i was half looking for CAFE KASHKAR, sietsema's uighur find, to try some plov but i missed it. hows that place doing? thx for any info about the cafes.
ps-- on the way back of course i stopped in DIFARAS. it was quiet and about to rain and he was very happy with my (usual) chinoto choice to drink so i got to chatting with him a bit. of course the drink got him to talking about italy and then how busy he is these days. someone taped up last weeks voice cover on the wall and he had a laugh about that but i sure did congradulate him anyway. a slow spell at DIFARAS, dont you just love it? oh like i have to say yeah the plain slice and a square were just perfect.
