We ate at Brennans in Berkeley last night. My family and I have been enjoying a dinner there for the past forty-five years. Haven't gone for a while, though. Always loved the french dip sandwiches with extra au jus on the side.
Ordered my Bombay Sappire martini--it was excellent. Chilled and very dry.
Ordered my roast beef sandwich, too. It was horrible. The meat was so tough I ended up picking out the meat and just eating the sourdough french bread dipped in the au jus which was also horrible--too salty and probably canned. Just yuck.
My husband and daughter had the November special--the turkey plate. Lots of turkey (pretty dry); an ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes, steamed veggies and gravy. The gravy tasted ok. This is a huge plate of food and was only 5.95. Also came with a dinner roll and butter.
So, now that my french dip dreams have been so brutally smashed by the god awful Brennan experience, does anyone have a recommendation for classic roast beef sandwiches in the East Bay. Just beef, bread and jus. Nothing fancy schmancy.
