Does anyone know of anyplace to buy fresh (or prepared) breadfruit in Los Angeles?
I was introduced to the stuff in Jamaica a number of years ago by a guy in the mountains who, in addition to giving me a tour of his pot plantation, roasted me a breadfruit on top of a cinderblock with a flame burning beneath it. He served it up torn into chunks with rehydrated dried salt cod on top of it, and it was amazing. The texture was light and fluffy, but chewy.
I've since had it in Belize, where they call it massapan, but there they prepare it fried. Though it's also amazing, it doesn't compare to the simpler peasant preparation I had in Jamaica. I want to find a place that does it that way... or find a supplier so I can try to replicate the dish at home... or to just hear that there's someone else in the world who has had breadfruit this way before.
