Bova vs. Mike's Pastry

I recall a recent thread in which it was implied that people only go to Mike's for the cute little boxes (basically saying it's a tourist joint) and for good pastry you should go to Bova Bakery.

Well. Saturday night, having found myself in the N. End seeking pastry to take home and not even willing to consider standing in a ridiculously long line at either Mike's or Modern, we took the short walk to Bova to grab a few things. I have to say it was so sub-par it wasn't even funny. Cannoli filled long ago were soggy and covered with fake chocolate chips (come on! fake chocolate chips?) a lobster claw was filled with yummy cream, but the pastry was so tough it was like eating vinyl. A chocolate-dipped peanut butter cookie tasted like...nothing. Seriously, I don't know how they managed it. The texture was dry and crumbly like some cookies, but it had absolutely NO taste. Very bizarre.

On the flipside, a few weeks ago a co-worker went to Mike's and brought back a cute little box of cannoli that we ate a few hours later and they were crisp, flavorful and delicious, with real chocolate chips to boot. Past trips to Bova have been lackluster as well, but I have to say that is the last time I will waste money (and calories) there... you'll find me waiting in line at Mike's or Modern Pastry.
