Bono's - Long Beach

Christy Bono recently opened this casual café on Second Street in Belmont Shore. Two friends and I had a chance to sample it for lunch. Our opinion was a unanimous thumbs up. We each had the day's special risotto: prime beef tips, goat cheese, spinach and tomatoes. The dish was creamy, not overly rich, and the beef did not overpower the flavors - and made a very tender counterpoint to the chewiness of the rice. I'd go back for the bread alone - we were served an olive bread with a perfect crust, yet soft and full of olives inside, and a whole wheat type of bread, also perfect - both accompanied by a tasty tapendade. Attentive but not overly effusive service. The room is bright and open, about 20 tables, with another 10 tables or so on the patio. I'm looking forward to getting back there and trying out other things on the menu. They have a "to go" menu, also. Menu says "$18 corkage fee", for those of you who are interested.
