The products of Black Crow Bakery, produced in a wood-fired brick oven, are available in many fine stores in Portland and midcoast Maine, and are worth seeking out, but you may want to consider going straight to the source as we did last weekend, thanks to some friends nearby.
The bakery is located on a farm several miles west of I-95 exit 26 (Richmond-Litchfield -I believe rte 197), which is between Augusta and Brunswick.
Because they are mainly a wholesale operation, its best to call in your order, since they tend to run out fairly early in the am. Your order will be bagged up and ready when you call for it. Phone # is 207-268-9927.
Different breads are available on different days - most with grain they grind themselves. Great flavor and crunch, several cuts above the average sourdough artisanal loaf. We particularly liked the brown rice, and poppy seed wheat, but all of the versions tasted, from country to tuscan to semolina italian were very good. Our friends also recommended their almond/apricot bread (think I got that right) which is flatter, more like a focaccia, and they have some pastry also.
