Went to Bistro Verdu last night, chowkid was at "parent's night out" cleverly provided by the preschool he attends, so went from work to a 6pm reservation. We were the first ones there, but it filled up quick.
We brought wine, of course, and decided to go with a bunch of small plates:
Cheese plate: nice plate of several choices with thin bread slices plus our waitress brought extra bread & butter as well. Good sized portions, which I have found lacking in cheese plates.
Sausages, merguez? I can't remember, my husband ordered them, they came in a broth with some potatoes & onions, they were thin and nice & spicy. Very yummy.
Lemongrass mussels: my husband probably could have finished the broth with a straw, he really loved these! I have a couple of mussells, a bit spicy for my personal tastes but very good.
Calamari special: holy cow was this good. These came sauteed in abroth, I think a saffron broth? It was delicious.
Salad special - romaine with fried anchovy - my husband had this, I didn't even get a taste, he liked it but thought the tempura anchovies were sort of different.
I had the watercress/pear/feta/walnut special, nice bistro standby. needed bacon (pork fat rules, right?)
Dessert: Hubbby had the ice cream sandwich, I had 1 bite, yummy yummy yummy, but I was too busy eating the star anise flan. Normally I don't go for flan but I really enjoyed this, it was light with just a hint of the spice.
All in all an awesome place, lots of fish choices on the spring menu so next time we will bring a white wine choice too.
Make a reservation, it fills up, and it does get a little bit noisy. But "adult" noisy, not 20-something noisy, if you know what I mean.
