It all started with an episode of The Best Thing I Ever Ate. It featured the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck and we were sent on a dippy cone fever. We tried several in L.A., but like so many other things, none left as enchanted as the one we had seen on Television.
So we went tonight to see if the heightened expectations could be met. They were. Dommy and I shared the mythical Salty Pimp and it took my current favorite Ice Cream Dessert the Straus Soft Serve with Carmel and Maldon Salt from pit fire [FYI It may not be on the menu at this time] and took it too another level The Ice Cream was both creamy and light on the tongue and was a good base for the flavors they layered on it. It was fun watching them put it together and seeing a power Grinder dusting the Sea Salt on the cone. The careful application of the ribbons of caramel and of course the quick dip into the chocolate.
They serve it in boat with a spoon. But on a cool night, it didn't warrant it, so we ordered it straight up. The chocolate shell was thin, nice dark flavor. The caramel popped on the tongue, didn't overpower the vanilla soft serve. The salt wasn't a huge hit, like those trying too hard salty chocolate bars, but a true accent to the overall flavors. And the cake cone, at first, didn't seem like anything special, especially since by then you have eaten all the chocolate, but it actually added a nice textural finish as it was wonderfully crisp. We inhaled it...and were ready to get back in line. But just kinda like a first kiss... we decided to walk away and just savor the memory.
