My family and I have returned from a quick trip to New Orleans. We had six meals. All were very good to excellent except for one. We ate at Palace Cafe, Sid-Mars, Galatoires, Ugelsich's, Friends in Covington, and Cafe de Monde. We were baffled by the long wait, small portions, high prices, unusual service standards, and unremarkable quality of food at Ugelsich's. The owner told us that 80% of his clientele
are tourists. Maybe that is the answer. If we did not have to pay for our food an hour before we saw it we would have left and gone to Popeye's down the street.I urge all Chowhounds to be wary.
We had raw oysters that were good as well as small appetizer portions of fried green tomatoes. The "gator" stew had more olives than alligator and caused my ten year old to ask where the meat was. The po-boys were small and unremarkable and the trout was okay. There was nothing worth eating spending 2.5 hours for lunch, most of which was on a line. Four apps, 3 entrees, 4 cokes, and four beers were $75.00 before tip. The neighborhood was not as bas as we expected.
