My current favorite, and long time haunt, is Fred Burrell's (Burrell's BBQ) in Santa Ana.
Collard greens on the side of the building.
Fred's place in Santa Ana sits in a pretty bad neighborhood and for years there was a bullet hole in his window.
Don't let that stop you, please.
He purchased an old house in the heart of the city and made it a bbq joint. It is painted orange with "BBQ Joint" hand painted on the building, just to Fred's style.
The screen door slams as you walk in. Almost like their bell. Fred is usually in the back working on something or the other, foodwise, and will always greet you with that famous smile.
"Hey, how ya doin'?"
Cookie doesn't work there anymore but when she did and was on the counter, it was like stepping back into time. They would jaw at each other for hours on end, and run a business in between.
It is still worth the trip.
Fred offers country ham, tips, ribs, meat, homemade sausage, chicken a couple other meats. It is all smoked right on the spot, but that is only half of the treats.
Fred has, in my opinion, the best greens in CA. He grows them on the side of the house and puts them straight into the pot with pork fat and slowly simmers them for HOURS. They melt in your mouth, without the bitter of greens and all of that great pork flavoring, but not overpowering.
His mac 'n cheese is out of this world.
Don't miss the cobbler.
Dirty rice is truly dirty with flavor.
Beans are always good.
You eat on picnic tables in the "back yard" community style.
This place CAN'T be beat.
