Was in the neighborhood of Ba Ren the other day and since i had been wanting to try it for a while, i decided to stop by. Since i forgot the address i googled it on the blackberry and got the address from KirkK's blog(thanks). Upon entering i was the only non Chinese person in the place which i always see to be a good sign. After perusing the long menu I decided upon the Spicy Beef Casserole. I love sichuan casseroles so i figured this would be a good judge of the place. The food came out a short while later. A big bowl of red stew with large chunks of scallion, cilantro, and hunks of fatty beef. was placed in front of me. Upon first taste i found it to be pretty bland, that spicy euphoria inducing kick that i normally love in the cuisine was absent. As i ate the level did build up, but not to the level i would have liked. The stew was good and i did enjoy the sweet potato noodles that were in it, but overall i was a little dissapointed. The hunks of beef were basically all fat, which i happen to like, so that was no problem with me, however, i can only eat so much fat and would have liked a little more meat.
Did i order the wrong thing? Did they tone down the spice level due to my being foreign? I was gung ho to start and will give the place another shot, but maybe with a better game plan.
Maybe i just should have tried the puerto Rican place on balboa i passed.
