Ayara report

Mr Grub | Apr 14, 2006 02:13 PM

Many months ago, the fetching Mrs Grub bribed the Grubman to accompany her to her favorite scrapbooking store on 87th St in Westchester. “There’s a great Thai restaurant right next door,” says she. “My treat.”

“Yea, right,” thinks I, “just like Thai Dishes. Harumphh.” Maybe next time. Months pass & Ayara Restaurant in Westchester is mentioned favorably on the board a few times. The delightful Mrs G re-bribes & off we go.

Many visits later, the Grubber must go on record w this recco: If you want splendid Thai food on the Westside, take the time to search this place out. It’s just off Sepulveda & Manchester, kinda behind Paco’s Cantina (don’t even think about it) on Manchester.

Small, lovely minimalist design featuring carved ayaras (elephants). Family-run w servers who are unwaveringly friendly & helpful, if a bit leisurely. Small, not-so-lovely minimalist winelist, so BYO. Not sure what their corkage policy is, but I’d wager corkage, if any, is also minimalist.

The food – everything we’ve ever eaten – is excellent. Curries are terrific, Grubsan’s fave is Panang. They do an excellent “crazy fish,” a whole pompano scored & deep-fried, w a tangy Thai sauce. All the usual suspects like pad Thai are also spot-on, as are the soups. For something more mundane, even the bbq chicken rocks.

All this at reasonable prices.
