I'm not looking for the fanciest or most authentic here. When I'm in pocket, I find Papajin a few blocks down very satisfactory or somewhere in Chinatown if I'm driving.
What I'm after sounds a little odd, but in other cities you can go into fast food Chinese restaurants and get something for $6.95 that's pleasant enough eating, let's say tofu in garlic sauce with some broccoli and not a bushel of mushy green bell peppers.
For some reason in Chicago, most places without tablecloths are total culinary abomination. Near me, for instance, there's Eat First where it is in fact a great idea to eat first if you're going to go, and Anne's Mandarin which isn't completely awful, but the sauces are so thick and sweet you feel like you've had dessert.
Am I seeking something that doesn't exist in Chicago? Is there edible fast Chinese?
