We are looking to throw an Asian-themed Bar Mitzvah party for our son this February. His birthday is the weekend immediately before Chinese New Year's. Previously on his birthday we have taken his friends to Chinatown to celebrate and, as a family, most every year we have gone for a Chinese New Year's banquet. In any event, we thought it could be a good idea to do something similar for his party. We will not serve shrimp, or pork, and we are otherwise fine with the idea of an Asian venue. Our plan would be to have Lion Dancers or similar and we can decorate the venue with some New Year nick naks and hand out red envelopes as gifts, etc.
As for locations, midtown is best because the morning ceremony will be in midtown and we would like to stay in walking distance, more or less. If not, we would have to hire buses, which can be a pain, and expensive. We will be about 125 people or so, adults and kids. It will likely be an afternoon party. We are considering:
Shun Lee Palace
Asia de Cuba (a bit far)
Phillipe (in the east 60s)
Any other places come to mind?
We have a favorite place in Chinatown we've been going to for years and could throw the party there but, its likely too small and my wife doesn't seem thrilled with that idea.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Is it fine to serve Peking Duck at such a party?
