Best area to stay for foodies?

HI, I couldn't find this question asked before, so here it goes: Where is the best area to stay for foodies?

Some specifics about us: We are two SF Bay foodies coming to the Miami - FT. Lauderdale area the end of Sept. We will be spending 2 days with my SOs family and plan to spend the other 2 sight seeing, swimming in the ocean, and eating good food. We are mainly interested in eating food that isn't prevalent in the SF area like Cuban, Caribbean, local Seafood, etc...
In SF we have a lot of tourists, and the most touristy areas here have the worst food at the worst prices. Right now we are leaning towards staying in South Beach, but I am worried that it may have that same problem as our touristy areas. Are my concerns unfounded? I am also considering staying at Lauderdale by the Sea.
We are in our early 30s, but we are boring for our age and don't like clubbing. We want to stay at least walking distance from the beach and have access to good breakfasts, lunches, dinners (although we are willing to drive for dinner since we will have a car), and some nice places to have a glass of wine, a well balanced cocktail or a microbrew.... For meals, we not into atmosphere as much as food quality. A hole in the wall or fancy meal... both will please if the food hits the mark.

I will do more research on this board for where to specifically eat once I figure out where we should stay. Your help is much appreciated.
