Went to the Cafe on Friday night. Was looking forward to it, because my husband loves herring and everything on their menu sounded delicious. Plus the space looked interesting online.
The food was delicious. Highlights were the Gentleman's Delight (I think that's the name) herring and the warm smoked salmon main course, but everything was fine, and nicely presented. We could have gotten a $35 prix fixe menu, but forgot about this option until we ordered dessert (also tasty, actually).
We only drank wines by the glass, and the selection of this, I thought, was very good. Austrian white, dessert wines, fun stuff.
Service was extremely attentive and pleasant.
The puzzle is, Why isn't this place more fun? It reminded me of the Bar Room at the Modern: modern decor, very good and interesting food, similarly priced, nearly the same neighborhood, and actually here the service was better. But I would go back there all the time and while I enjoyed dinner, I wouldn't go back to the Cafe in the near future.
I left kind of wanting to leave them a list of tiny little fixes they could make: turn the lighting down, get better music, maybe do something with that white floor. Because it really could be a very good restaurant, if it were somewhat sexier. I'd happily eat the warm smoked salmon again.
Anyone else have any ideas on what they should do?
