Apizza is a new gourmet pizza restaurant/parlor located in downtown Stayton, OR. Founded by three local entrepreneurs (a husband/wife/friend team), it's only been open a few weeks.
Apizza has several unique features that set it apart from other local pizza parlors, including only having non-mass market soft drinks in 12oz glass bottles and only one size of pizza - 12". The pizza's are hand-pulled (not tossed) flatbread, resulting in a square shape. They are baked on stone resulting in a soft crust - even a bit chewy of one in places, but not objectionally so. The toppings on our pizza were thick enough that occasionally a fork was required.
The menu only contains six "fixed" pizza pies - the "White Pie" ($6.00), which is just the flatbread crust with an oil & garlic sauce with a small amount of Romano cheese and pepper, the "Smashed Potato Pie" ($9.00), which includes mashed potatoes, garlic, cream, romano & chives, the "Steak & Cheese Pie" ($16.00), which is just what it sounds like, the "Veggie Pie" ($16.00), which comes with a 4 line list of incredients, the "Vegan Pie" ($14.50), which is the Veggie Pie minus the cheese but with more sauce, and the "Cheese Pie" ($8.50) which is your basic mozzarella & light tomato sauce pie. There are also 12 additional ingredients, from bacon to artichoke hearts to roasted red peppers, that can be added to any of the pies. Additional ingredients are $2.50per added to the base price of the pie.
Laura and I had a Cheese Pie with pepperoni, olives, and caramelized onions on it. Quite delicious, the pepperoni was placed edge to edge over the entire pie, covering it completely. There were also generous amounts of black olives and onions on top of the pepperoni, although the onions appeared to be a little undercooked to be properly caramelized. Due to the irregular square shape of the pie, wedges cut into it are also irregularly sized. We were told when we ordered that it would be ready in 20 minutes, and indeed 20 minutes later it was being placed in front of us.
There were lightly charred areas on the crust, which was expected - it's described as a side effect of stone-baking at extremely high heat. The pepperoni was also spicier than Laura was used to, but I liked it a lot.
The drink selection is decidedly different - instead of the normal taps of Pepsi or Coke, the only soft drinks come in 12oz glass bottles. Remarkably, this was the second time in two days that Laura and I had had sodas in glass - the night before we'd been at the Stayton-Sublimity Chamber of Commerce open house where they had "Hot Lips" Strawberry & Raspberry sodas. Apizza features Cricket Colas, both in cane sugar and diet, two different root beers, two different ginger ales, a sasparilla, and several fruit sodas. They also have a small wine list, including organic wines from Spain, South Africa and Argentina, as well as a selection of draft and bottled beers that would do justice to a small tavern and something called "Fox Barrel Pear Cider" in bottles. They also have ice tea and self-serve ice water available.
The decor is fairly sparse, but the seating is comfortable and intimate, with both chairs and high-backed booths in walnut stained wood. The "markers" they use to identify who to deliver the pizza to are cute - they're wood alphabet blocks.
The total cost for our pizza and two sodas came to $19.00. We'll be back again.
