antica pizzeria

i made it there yesterday with the fam - the pizza ranks as some of best i've had in la, probably the best. my son had the margherita with mushrooms - i ordered the penne vodka (as suggested by robin tuvi) and my wife the spaghetti carbonara. The penne was the best i've have although i don't usually order it - a rounded pink sauce with a tangy tomato base, crushed red pepper kick and crunch of scallion - pasta was cooked to perfection. a tasty ceasar came with my lunch special - crisp romaine and nice anchovy kick. the spaghetti tasted great alhough a little heavy with the cream and oversalted - the chef should not have salted it at all with panchetta providing enough - saying that, i still finished all of it (wife & i traded midway). The pizza was not up to my favorite brooklyn hangouts but was close - a must try - a wood fired brick oven at 850F - 900F is just awesome. We did not have wine or dessert, just a bottle of sparkling water - bill came to $37 (excluding tip).

The place being located in a big mall was a downer in terms of ambience but parking was simple (btw it's located at the 2nd level on the west side). This place is not an angelini osteria but is trailing close behind. Antica Pizzeria then Costco then Massimo's will become a regular venture for me. I'd have dessert at antica and take home some gelato from massimo - he's tops in that department.
