Annual Dessert Orgy at Chez Zee (Austin)

About once a year, the hub and I indulge in a special-occasion related dessert orgy at Chez Zee. This time we were celebrating the 7th anniversary of our first date. Mr. C said he wanted cake, so off to Chez Zee we went.

We ordered coffee and the special, a chocolate peanut butter cheesecake; a Chez Zee standard we'd been longing to try, the lemon rosemary cake; and our longstanding fave, the Coco Leches cake.

The cheesecake was good. Not brilliant, but good. There was a light chocolate cookie crust. The filling was creamy, and there was a beautiful chocolate ganache on top. We both liked that it wasn't overly sweet; but if I'd been really jonsing for the taste of chocolate and peanut butter together, this would not have satisfied. No flavor was present enough. It wasn't chocolatey, peanut buttery, or cheesecakey enough --- so it was pleasant, but not memorable. I would have liked a darker chocolate.

My favorite was the lemon rosemary cake. Although rosemary sounds like an unusual choice for a sweet, you really only taste the thought of rosemary in this cake. It's lemony without being overwhelming; the layers are light; there's a lovely lemon curd on top; and the overall effect is quite refreshing. The only thing neither of us cared for was the thick, sickeningly sweet frosting, which fortunately was only on the outside of the cake. It was just too much. (And I am usually a complete frosting floozy).

The Coco Leches cake is the best I've had anywhere. By the time we got to it, we only wanted a bite or two, so we had it boxed up with a few leftover bites of the others and took it home. It's deliciously moist and light, with coconut and the traditional tres leches flavor, and overall not too sweet, though I could wish for the use of unsweetened coconut in the recipe.

Coffee was a good, strong, dark roast, but it took me twenty minutes to get a refill. I've had better service at Chez Zee. It was early on a weeknight and not particularly crowded. All in all, though, a delicious and worthy experience!
