We had a belated VD dinner on Sunday to avoid the rip-off mayhem. Hadn't been to Angelini in a while and had heard rumors that it has been slipping. Untrue.
We started with beef carpaccio w/arugula, reggiano and black truffles and the mixed greens w/gorgonzola and pear. The carpaccio incredibly fresh tasting and melted in with the salad and truffles. The salad had the best gorg. I have ever tasted - was a bit gooey. Hub had the venison loin special which was as tender as any meat I have tasted. I had the pumpkin tortelli w/asparagus & brown butter - was rich and delicate. Finished with an excellent cappucino and a decent chocolate tart.
Brought wine and paid a very reasonable $15 corkage.
I have to say that the service was awful. It is a great credit to the food that it didn't ruin the experience. Our waiter was brusque and borderline rude. He took a very long time to bring us water, to open the wine and forgot to put the dessert order in. He often ignored us as he walked by and did not apologize when things went bad. He never checked to see if the food was good. It was not a particularly busy Sunday night and there were a few empty tables - something I have never seen there before. I will call & talk to them about the service issue as it really was horrible.
Still, I believe that Angelini is one of the best and most interesting restaurants in LA. Their food is graceful and clearly prepared with great care. We will give them another shot.
