Now I *know* that most of you don't want to race up to New Rochelle for dinner, but Alvin and Friends is a fabulous restaurant, and one where you can have a special dining experience. We've been living in New Rochelle for several years, and basically enjoy the food scene, with just enough excellent restaurants to keep us happy. So when the owner of AOC Wines told us to try Alvin's we thought it would be another decent addition to the restaurant scene. We were wrong. It's a fabulous place that mixes serious food with a wonderful vibe. We've been there four times, and out experience has been uniformly wonderful. From the succulent jerk chicken wings to the oyster stew, the combination of Caribbean, Southern and upscale cooking is marvelous. Tonight we had the Shrimp Samantha with toasted risotto and mushrooms and the pork chop. Both were excellent; and in the past we've had the duck and the crispy friend chicken, as well as several of the sides. The food doesn't shy away from strong flavors, but the combinations are original and compelling.
Alvin himself is a wonderful owner/maître d'. A former actor and model who is also a brilliant painter, it is his taste and charm that make dining at Alvin and Friends something more than just another culinary experience.
Unlike many other restaurants in the country the crowd is eclectic reflecting the delightful diversity of Southern Westchester. Worth a special trip. You won't be disappointed.
