Albita's...Reno Chowdown possibility?

I had read a profile of the new owner/chef of this little Mexican place recently in the RGJ business section...and was in the neighborhood today so decided to check it out. Definitely worth a second look. Its a very casual place, where you order and then find a seat and they bring out your food. Small, maybe 15 tables. Its in a little professional building/strip mall...parking is definitely an issue. By the time I left at noon the line to order was 15 people long, so word seems to be out.

Anyway, breakfast had ended when I got there, but the article said the owners are accommodating so decided to test them. Huevos Rancheros? No problemo. I have to admit those were some of the best huevos I've had in awhile: overeasy eggs with the yolks appropriately runny, delicious not-too-thick sauce, and just a hint of queso fresco (not gobs of americanized stuff like you see in too many places). The accompanying corn tortillas were definitely freshly made, and based on their thickness and shape I'd guess they were hand-patted as well. Yum! My meal came with some excellent salsa casera and delicious home-made tortilla chips. The meal was also dirt cheap: Huevos Rancheros with rice, beans and tortillas was $3.99.

As I was waiting to order I watched the chef make an order of camerones rancheros (the kitchen is open to view). Those shrimp looked delicious and fresh! We've been talking about a Reno Mexican chowdown, maybe we should consider this place. I'd recommend talking to the owners ahead of time: I have a feeling we could get a few special dishes and at least that would give us a better chance of getting the one table there that could handle our size of group.....

Albita's is at 1280 Terminal Way about two blocks north of the airport on the same side of the street. Used to be another Mexican place; bought out recently. Check it out.
