Dickey’s BBQ Pit chain opened today in Troy on Rochester Rd., next to Ashoka. Wow, with Picano’s practically across the street, this strip is relatively becoming a little piece restaurant heaven. Perhaps you’ve been to a Dickey’s in nearby Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, or in its hometown of Dallas? This is Michigan’s first, and its franchisees are a seemingly nice couple of Hewlett Packard dropouts who live and worked near Flint.
I’m pumped up. The sides are all decent, even though none distinguish themselves as being “must haves” over their brethren. Each side is solid and undisappointing. I had the beef brisket today and I thought it firmly ranked about #5 or better (on a bad day at Clarkston Woodshop), in the greater DTW area. Not bad for “quick serve” (euphemism for fast food)!
BBQ is about as sticky of a subject as is politics, but honestly and objectively speaking, the vast majority of barbecue brisket in DTW just doesn’t hold up to Dickey’s. Take that for what it’s worth, and flog me if you may. http://www.dickeys.com/our_menu/full_...
In addition to a generous portion of brisket, I got two sides, a roll that was actually good, a big whole pickle, and good ice cream, all for $9.00 +tax, with no tip needed! I'm stuffed, everything was good, and the brisket was even very good (not Slow’s great, but very good). Beat that within ten miles.
PS---This will be a fave’ of children, too, with the kid Q special, free pickles and soft you-serve ice cream. Free on Sunday's, I think.
