This is Mezze's new spot, on Rt.2 just south of town, in the house of the former 30+ year resident, Le Jardin. Very handsome interior and lovely open rooms with attractive welcoming colors.
"Farm to table' place with the unfortunate emphasis on 'unadorned, plain and simple' that this latest trend seems to have. Unfortunately in this case, I am not a 'meat and potatoes' locavore. The menu is limited and very plain. Menu choices were very easy because I ordered the menu's only 2 'inventive' dishes. The app was a neat idea- Beet cavatelli with blue hill cheese, walnuts, julienned apples and thin sliced beats. The flavors and textures were really good but the pasta was way undercooked. Same with my squid ink pasta w/ octopus, which realistically should have been called Braised octopus and squid ink linguine Diavolo. just another spicy marinara. what a shame to waste octopus on a red sauce italian dish. if you're going to use octopus, an unusual item in these parts, why not fly with some inventive preparation? My Love had a very good clean gazpacho. His local ribeye steak came with 4 slices of local tomato and was $38. Plus $6 for the side of buttered tiny lovely creamer potatoes. sigh. Surprisingly, desserts were a highlight- a very satisfying berry peach cobbler w/ wheat germ maple gelato, and an espresso semifreddo. yummm.
The clincher is that Mezze, at this point, is the only good non-asian dinner in a seriously food-hinterland town. Locals say they drive 1.5 to 2 hours for an excellent dinner. South in MA. or over into N.Y. Let's hope this is all just because this is a new spot for Mezze. Let's hope for the best.
