The $50 Gourmet?

Hello everyone,

I'm dropping into Manhattan for a little while from Toronto and would like to have dinner with a friend. My friend and I are both fairly passionate about food, but we've decided to set a budget. So, I was hoping to get some suggestions for dinner for approx. $50 (not including wine since neither of us are big drinkers), or lunch for about $35.

He recently went to Tabla for Restaurant Week and loved it; he's also recently been to Hearth and enjoyed it but wasn't overly impressed. He has an eye on Eleven Madison Park, but it might be too pricey? I loved Nobu, but we've both been there. I'd like to go to Chanterelle or Daniel, but again - budget! ;)

To try and narrow things down a bit, I'd prefer restaurants which aren't focused on Asian food (I live in Chinatown here, so you know...getting a bit tired of straightforward Asian fare...), and no steakhouses or bbq places either. Perhaps someplace with a prix fixe might be a good bet?

Unfortunately, I have no idea in terms of location of which area(s) we're aiming for. I'm assuming in the same region as the other restaurants he's been to.

Thanks in advance for any advice you could offer! And sorry for the boring, generic question, but it's a one-shot deal and I needed the best advice possible :)
