After reading good reports on 5-Star Diner in Long Island City on Chowhound for a couple of years, I finally broke down and went there yesterday. What took so long was the fact that we had food delivered from there when we moved to LIC 6 years ago. It was a disaster on the three times we tried it.
After reading about the Chowhound get together, I wanted to see the Godfather room and finally try their Butter Chicken.
What a dump!!! I tried to order from the menu and they more or less insisted that I try their buffet. Nothing was truly bad, but nothing was good either. The vegatable samosas were flavorless. The tandoori chicken was warmed up and flavorless. They only had dark meat too. The butter chicken was o.k. but nothing to write home about. The same was true of the vegatable curry, the dal, and the two other dishes.
It could be that a could not wait to get out of there. The place is dirty and shabby. This may seem interesting to others, but for me, there are many other uninteresting Indian joints located throughout the city that are better. Because of the positive comments about this place, and the willingness of chowhounders to make a pilgramage there without complaint, I question whether I share the same palate of other chowhounders.
P.S. The place does not seem to attract very many cab drivers and other SouthEast Asians, maybe they know something.
