I spent 4 great days in New York. I trolled the chowhound board for suggestions. So thank you for all the adviise:
Jean Georges: I went for the Classics Tasting Menu dinner last week. I had been to Jean Georges many years ago and remembered it as one of the best meals of my life. I am not sure if I am more jaded or just didn't enjoy some of the classics, During the first few courses the only one that wowed me was the egg caviar. The last few courses made up for it, the lobster and squab dishes had the layers of flavors and textures that put Jean Georges on my top restaurants list. I enjoyed that they served ½ glasses of wine.
Casa Mono: Sunday night was able to easily get a seat at the bar. Excellent food. Lobster with Spicy Sweet Potato and Agua de Coco: very good, lobster was tender in a light broth of sweet potato/coconut water. Pork belly with sunchoke and artichokes: excellent crispy pork belly hunks the artichokes and sunchokes were well seasoned with herbs. The Razor Clams looked excellent but I didn’t have room left.
Red Egg: Red Egg Shrimp Dumplings - Excellent, Home Town Savory Triangles - Very good. Durian Puff - okay but wouldn't order it again. I didn't enjoy the one item that was red bean and pork ( I can;t remember what it was called). Service a little standoffish but much better than your typical dim sum restaurant.
Tamarind: Executive lunch is a good deal, but overall I think I would have been happier ordering off the full menu. Seafood skewer and chicken were very good. Red snapper seemed overcooked.
Shanghai Café Delux: pork & crab XLB: the broth and filling were great, but the skins were thick and a little tough. Fried wontons were the best I have had with a good amount of tasty filling.
Ceci-Cela: Excellent price for great croissants. Plain croissant was crisp outside, nice and tender layers inside..almost a little too much butter left a slightly heavy after taste. Small chocolate croissant had a nice chocolate filling think and not too sweet.
Dominique Ansel: Kouign Amman was excellent but pricey, sort of a croissant cupcake with caramel drizzle.
Momofuku: I had stopped by the midtown location and the only thing they were not sold out of were some blueberry cookies. I ran into a booth at the Union Square Christmas markets.. and picked up a slice of crack pie. I could become addicted to this.
L'Arte Gelato: decent price and much better than store bought.. but my local gelato shop is better although costs more. I think for next trip I will try Grom. I remember loving some fig gelato from Grom in italy.
Two Little Red Hens: Excellent cheesecake.. perfect and I has been a long time since I have had any so good.
