Had dinner last Sunday night at the Would in Highland. I had heard very mixed reports on it from the same set of friends. One time they had great meals and the next time with a party of eight, all entrees were sent back.
Started with black bean soup which was very undistinguished, seemed to be made with canned black beans, about halve of which were still intact in the puree. This was not any where near as good as the same item at the Gypsy Wolf in Woodstock. My entree was duck breast with pomegranite molasses. The duck was fine and the sauce was OK, nothing super. What really bummed me out were the side dishes, watery almost tasteless yellow squash, and equally insipid brown rice. At $18 I think the plate deserves better than that. The waitress was pleasant but nervous. The steak and veal shank my friends had looked good and they were happy with them. We all passed on desert.
On the way out we met other friends who had just sat down and tried some of their calmari appetizer, this seemed to be a good sized portion and was nicely fried.
When I'm in the mood to spend this sort of money for a meal I think I'll wait until I can get to Terrapin.
