Do you still need 1 month in advance reservations etc?

Having read numerous articles about the woeful state of the american economy along with gloomy predictions for the fate of many New York dining establishments in the NYTimes (specifically, articles about restaurants reducing prices, half-full, going out of business etc), do you still need to make reservations one month in advance for top restaurants like Danube, Bobbo, Le Bernardin etc?

Or has the frenzy abated somewhat now that there are no longer 5000 people simultaneously dialing the likes of Daniel exactly one month in advance? Any recent experiences appreciated, since I intend to make reservations at Babbo for late October, but I'm not sure if the 1-month rule religiously applies...
