Many historical sources show that Ulysses S. Grant had a drinking habit, and his drink of choice seems to be a Kentucky bourbon whiskey called Old Crow, which exists even today.

However, the drink was made differently back then in the 19th century. It was invented in the 1830s by Scottish chemist James E. Crow, who perfected the sour mash process.

The process uses leftover fermented grains from a bourbon batch to create the next batch. It stabilizes the flavor across multiple batches and adds a sweet flavor rather than sour.
