Oatmeal is easy to make, nutritious, and customizable, but don't make the mistake of heating it in the microwave — it turns out there is a high risk it could explode.

As oatmeal heats, the water within it evaporates and turns into steam. The steam accumulates underneath the surface of the food and will eventually cause it to explode.

To prevent exploding oatmeal, opt for low heat on the stove rather than a microwave. Also, use a pot rather than a pan, as the higher edges will help control any splatter.

If the microwave is your only option, try placing a microwave-safe dish over the bowl's top to control the explosion or heat only the water in the microwave, then add the oats.
