Why Costco's Kirkland Parmigiano Reggiano Is A Huge Deal

Made in Italy and carrying all the labels that mark it as authentic, a roughly-2-pound block of Costco’s Kirkland Parmigiano Reggiano costs $10.99 per pound, which is quite cheap.
It has the stamp of approval from the European Union's DOP (their official designation of origin) and the seal of authenticity from the Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano-Reggiano.
The latter scrutinizes the cheese-making recipes and practices of Italian Parmigiano Reggiano producers. The small cheese wheel and wedge on the packaging is the Consortium's logo.
The item is labeled "Parmigiano Reggiano" and not Parmesan, meaning it’s real and not an imitation. The "Parmigiano Reggiano" imprinted on the cheese’s rind also proves it’s legit.
