Whiskey Tasting Mistakes Everyone Makes

Palate

Whiskey boasts diverse flavor profiles. To fully appreciate the taste, don’t drink it after eating something too flavorful, and don't go into a tasting on an empty stomach.

Glassware

When tasting whiskey, use a glass that allows the whiskey to "open up" and express its flavors through scent and taste, such as a tulip-shaped glass like the Glencairn.

Temperature

Serving whiskey too warm or too cold can alter the flavors. This is why experts say whiskey should be served at room temperature, about 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Straight

While you can add ice or water to whiskey, experts say to serve it straight to taste the whiskey in its true, unaltered form first. This will help you develop your palate.

Pacing

When doing a tasting, take your time and properly appreciate the whiskey's complex flavors and mouthfeel rather than knocking it back right away or taking a big gulp.
