Consisting of nothing more than tequila, orange juice, and grenadine, the tequila sunrise is a no-frills cocktail with a gradience that mimics the orange-to-red ombre of a sunrise.

In contrast, there are many different recipes for the tequila sunset. Some swap in blackberry brandy for grenadine, while others swap in grapefruit or pineapple juice for orange.

All tequila sunset cocktails are variations of the sunrise, but there are other tequila drinks that use different liqueurs and mixers and may have inspired the sunset varieties.

For example, the El Diablo uses creme de cassis, a currant-based liqueur that’s somewhat similar to blackberry liqueur or brandy. Comparably, the paloma contains grapefruit.
