What Is XXXX Beer? Australia's Pride And Joy Explained

XXXX Beer traces its origins back to 1878 when brothers Nicholas and Edward Fitzgerald established a brewery in Brisbane with a vision to create exceptional ales.
The brand garnered its name by 1893. XXXX Beer derives its name from the tradition of assessing beer quality with Xs, where a greater number of Xs signifies superior quality.
While they quickly gained popularity in Queensland, they struggled to expand to hotter, drier regions of Australia until Alhois ‘Bill’ Leitner resolved the transportation issues.
Leitner not only found a new way to clean the brew vessels but also introduced XXXX Bitter, a brew so popular that the recipe hasn’t changed since its inception in 1924.
The company currently makes seven beer varieties: XXXX Gold, XXXX Bitter, XXXX Dry, Summer Bright Lager, Summer Bright Lime, Summer Bright Mango, and XXXX Zero.
The brand describes one of its core beers, XXXX Gold, as having “a balanced, smooth flavour and body, complemented by mild bitterness and a trace of sweetness.”
The Summer Bright Lager, according to the company, has a refreshing taste and a smooth hop character whereas XXXX Zero, the non-alcoholic beer, has a crisp finish and slight aroma.
