What Costco Workers Are Looking For When They Check Your Receipt

Shopping at Costco often entails having your receipt checked at the exit, serving the dual purpose of preventing theft and ensuring accuracy between purchases and items in the cart.
Costco employees, stationed at the exit, are looking for things that your cashier may have missed so the retailer can accurately track its inventory and save you from losing money.
Highly efficient at counting the contents of your cart, exit greeters compare the total number of items listed at the bottom of the receipt to how many you’re walking out with.
This way, if your cart is missing any items, the employee can alert you. Similarly, if you’ve been accidentally charged twice for an item, they will ensure the error is rectified.
They also check for specific indicators such as the supervisor’s initials on certain items like jewelry, as well as special markings for large merchandise and items exceeding $300.
Additionally, the employee will verify the authenticity of the receipt to prevent reuse by checking for a special code that changes daily and marking the receipt with a line.
