The myth that the meat in Arby’s roast beef sandwich is fake has been thoroughly debunked, yet it was attributed to the restaurant's massive decline in sales in the early 2000s.
Back in 1997, fact-checkers on Snopes asked Jim Lowder, head of quality assurance, about Arby's roast beef. He said the meat is real beef soaked in a self-basting solution.
Still, the rumor persisted. As late as 2014, Ask.com stated that Arby’s roast beef was delivered as a liquid in a bag, squirted as a liquid onto a tray, and baked into a solid.
Snopes says Arby's stores receive the roast beef in large, pre-cooked blocks inside bags full of marinade. It's then slow-roasted for three to four hours, then cooled and sliced.
Even in the 2020s, the roast beef has provoked speculation on Reddit. This may be in part because of the beef's unusually smooth and fat-free appearance and texture.
