The country responsible for producing the most number of potatoes in the world is China, followed by India, Ukraine, the Russian Federation, and the United States.
Per a 2022 survey by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the mainland of China is the top grower. China grows 95.5 million tons per year as a whole.
Potatoes are planted in four main regions. Per FAO, North China, Southwest China, South China, and Central China make up 47%, 38%, 8%, and 7% of total planting area, respectively.
Following the deadly Great Chinese Famine, which occurred between 1959 and 1961, China began upping its production. By 1993, it was at the head of international potato production.
By 2004, the first organic potato production site was established in Heilongjiang. Wuchuan County is currently the largest of all the organic potato producers in China.
Potatoes have been part of Chinese cooking for centuries, but they’ve now become more crucial than ever due to Western-influenced fast food-style eateries becoming more ubiquitous.
