If you salt the skillet when you add your chosen fat, the salt will disperse within the fat. When you add your sandwich, the salted butter or oil will evenly season the bread.
Lightly spread mayo on the outside of the bread. Mayonnaise has a higher smoke point than butter, allowing your bread to stay perfectly toasted without burning.
If you're after a golden exterior, pop your grilled cheese into an air fryer or waffle iron. The iron ensures that your cheese melts toasty and golden brown.
Place your grilled cheeses on a large sheet pan, oil or butter the bread, and bake them. Place them on the middle rack so they aren't too close or far from the heating element.
Too much heat will burn the bread before the cheese has time to fully melt. Start with medium heat, and drop it to medium-low towards the second half of the cooking time.
