Tomato soup is simple, but when celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay makes this comforting dish, he uses secret weapons in the form of kitchen tools and unlikely ingredients.

After searing the vegetables, he roasts the onions and garlic in a deep roasting pan for about 20 minutes and then adds chicken stock and cream.

He crushes the tomatoes with a potato masher for a chunkier and rustic tomato soup. Ramsay then adds a touch of sugar and a drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar.

Ramsay's tomato soup recipe is also about upping the tomato tastiness, and one way he achieves this is with a "punchy" sundried tomato pesto.
