Chef Gordon Ramsay has earned 17 Michelin stars over his long career; however, he faced public embarrassment when his restaurant, The London, lost two Michelin stars in 2013.
Getting a Michelin star is prestigious, but maintaining it requires consistent efforts. The London faced setbacks when it was downgraded by two stars due to its consistency issues.
Michelin guide director Michael Ellis told Bloomberg, “We’ve had some very erratic meals [there].” He explained that the Michelin team felt it was the right thing to do.
The downgrade was attributed to instability in the restaurant’s operations that stemmed from Ramsay’s busy schedules and his inability to give The London his undivided attention.
To put it simply, Ramsay is a chef with his fingers in too many pies as he has several TV shows, writes books, appears at events, and has several restaurants around the world.
As a result, in 2009, Ramsay sold the restaurant to The London Hotel, but it kept his name. Furthermore, the restaurant lacked an Executive Chef for a stretch, which wasn’t ideal.
