The Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store Has A 100-Year Mystery

Over 100 years later, the mystery behind the origins of the name "Piggly Wiggly" still puzzles shoppers.
The store's website claims that founder Clarence Saunders came up with the name when he saw “pigs struggling to get under a fence, which prompted him to think of the rhyme."
Historian Mike Freemen suggests it may be a combination of a nursery rhyme that begins, "Higgledy piggledy, my fat hen," and a children's story, "Uncle Wiggily's Adventures.”
According to The Tennessean, Saunders simply stated, "It took me two hours to find a name that was ridiculous enough."
The point of Piggly Wiggly’s name seems to be that it's strange enough to talk about — and x we are, still discussing it over a century later.
