Texas has a bit of a reputation for doing things its own way, and some Texans have an unusual way of drinking Dr. Pepper: hot (180 degrees Fahrenheit) and with a dash of lemon.
The recipe supposedly goes back to 1958, when Dr. Pepper president Wesby R. Parker looked to pump up wintertime sales. It was advertised in TV ads as the perfect holiday drink.
Some advertisements encouraged alcoholic versions, but the alcohol-free version proved more popular. In the '60s and '70s, you could even find hot Dr. Pepper at concession stands.
Though hot Dr. Pepper has fallen out of fashion, some Texans still hold it dear to their hearts, making it during the holidays or as a treat when they feel under the weather.
