Native New Yorker Anthony Bourdain often showcased his favorite local eateries, one of which was Gray's Papaya, a hot dog joint he dubbed "second home" in one of his books.
Gray's Papaya is a late-night eatery known for pairing papaya juice with griddled franks. It's also famous for its "Recession Special," featuring two hot dogs and a tropical drink.
Bourdain also called it "the institution for late-night chefs and local wanderers alike." He also wrote in his book, "When I start missing New York, this is what I miss."
Serving papaya juice and hot dogs for decades, it was a taste of his hometown for Bourdain. To eat a hot dog Bourdain-style, slather it in sauerkraut and also order a papaya juice.
