The Fast Food Restaurant That Introduced The Double Cheeseburger

The double cheeseburger has become a fast food staple, and its origins go all the way back to 1937 at the original Bob’s Big Boy location in California, known as Bob's Pantry.
Bob's Big Boy founder, Bob Wian, made the first double cheeseburger for a regular. He split a bun into thirds and slapped on two beef patties, cheese, mayo, lettuce, and relish.
Wian’s double decker cheeseburger sold so well that he renamed his restaurant after it, changing Bob’s Pantry to Bob’s Big Boy and making the mascot hold a double cheeseburger.
Surprisingly, it took more than a decade for other fast food chains to catch up. In-N-Out introduced the Double-Double in 1948, which helped popularize the double cheeseburger.
