For perfectly softened butter, Mary Berry suggests adding big cubes of cold cutter to a bowl of lukewarm water for 10 minutes before draining and creaming them with sugar.
The trick works fast, requires no extra equipment, and leaves very little room for error. In fact, the most difficult task will be getting the water to reach the right temperature.
Luckily, Berry shared a tip about the temperature in a masterclass for season three of BBC’s "The Great British Bake Off," saying it should somewhat mirror that of "a baby's bath."
