While the espresso martini has had a massive resurgence over the past few years, it's been around for almost 40 years and first saw broad popularity in the late 1980s.
The drink is said to have been created by late London bartender and personality Dick Bradsell in the late '80s, and it became a hit around the world throughout much of the '90s.
Its popularity faded in the 2000s as spirit-forward cocktails such as the negroni took the reins. However, the pandemic ushered in a '90s retro craze, bringing it back in vogue.
By 2022, the drink had experienced a full reversal in the U.S., with some declaring it the drink of the year. In 2023, Union ranked it as the number-three ordered cocktail.
