Steven Spielberg's E.T. Wasn't Supposed To Feature Reese's Candy

While fans certainly remember the iconic use of Reese's Pieces in Steven Spielberg's "E.T.," the film was actually supposed to use another kind of candy.
Spielberg originally chose M&M's because they were his favorite candy. However, things got complicated when it came to getting clearance to use M&M's in the film.
Producers sent Mars a proposal with a $1 million product placement fee, but no decision had been made by the time production was ending, so Spielberg looked for alternatives.
In the rush to find a replacement, Reese's parent company, Hershey's, agreed to the $1 million deal. This cleared up the prop issue and skyrocketed the sales of Reese's Pieces.
