Should You Buy Steak From Costco?

NEWS

Costco’s steak prices vary depending on location and the cut, but they are typically affordable quality steaks. That said, some factors must be considered
before making a purchase.
Firstly, Costco’s USDA Choice sirloin costs about $12 per pound. Though cheaper than $20-a-pound steaks from butchers, it’s pricier than $11-a-pound cuts from places like Walmart.
Secondly, Costco sells several other cuts at rational prices, and while many Redditors have praised cuts like NY strip, filet mignon, and beef tenderloin, some have shown concerns.
People have highlighted that
the steaks, specifically Kirkland Signature ones, are blade-tenderized, which makes the
cuts easier to chew but increases
the chance of contamination.
Cooking the steaks to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's recommended temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit eliminates the risk, but that’s the temperature
for medium doneness.
Hence, cooking these steaks
to rare or medium rare can be unsafe. However, not every steak sold at Costco is blade-tenderized, so it’s best to check the packaging before buying.
Lastly, Costco's steaks are large and usually come in packs of four. Unless you're cooking for a crowd, you'll have leftovers, which can be an issue if you're low on storage space.
